He was educated at Trinity High School; entered the British Army as an
ensign, 1744. He
rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel and on October
9th, 1782 was sworn in as Governor and commander-in-chief of Nova Scotia.
He was the last to hold this commission; it was changed in 1786 to that
of Lieutenant-Governor in which he took the oaths, 5 April,1787 and remained
so until his death in 1791. PARRSBORO, N.S. town in Cumberland County,
on the North shore of Minas Basin, was named in 1784 for John Parr, Gov.
of N.S. and was incorporated in 1889.
